메기의 추억 / 박인수 

 
옛날에 금잔디 동산에
메기 같이 앉아서 놀던 곳
물레방아 소리 들린다
메기야  내 희미한 옛생각
동산 수풀은 없어지고
장미화는 피어 만발 하였다
물래방아 소리 그쳤다
메기 내 사랑하는 메기야

캐나다 토론토에 조지 존슨(1839~1917)이라는 시인이 있었습니다.
존슨이 학교선생님이던 시절에 제자 메기 클라크(1842-1865)와
 서로 사랑하는 사이가 되었습니다. 존슨은 메기에 대한 지극한 
사랑을 즐겨 시를 써냈습니다. 둘은 1865년 결혼해서 오하이오주 
클리브랜드로 이사를 가고, 존슨은 그곳 학교에서 근무를 하게 됩니다. 
불행하게도 사랑하던 메기가 결혼한지 1년도 못되어 결핵으로 
세상을 떠나게 됩니다. 
존슨은 메기를 잃고난 아픔을 벗어나기 위해서 클리브랜드를 떠나서 
메기와의 추억이 어려있는 토론토로 돌아옵니다. 
존슨은 사랑하는 메기에 대한 추억과 애상을 시로 또 써냈습니다. 
그 시를 A.버터필드(1837~1891)가 곡을 붙여 1866년에 발표한 것입니다
